Downers Grove Ranks No. 2 Among Best Cities for Kids

kids playing in parkRecently, Chicago suburb Downers Grove was ranked No. 2 on’s “Top 10 Best Cities for Kids 2014.” Cities were considered based on percentage of households with school-age children, environment, crime rate, school ranking, cost of living and restaurants with kids’ menus. Downers Grove ranked among other cities in the top 10 including Boise, Iowa; Plano, Texas; Palo Alto, California and more.
What is it that makes Downers Grove so child friendly? By combining a crime rate that is less than a quarter of the national average, a highly-rated school system and excellent opportunities for recreation, Downers Grove has proven itself to be the perfect place to raise your children.
Throughout the year, the town offers more than 140 festivals and events to get kids and their families involved with the community. Events range from the Gingerbread festival in winter to the annual Fourth of July Parade in the summer. Community leaders emphasize a healthy, family-friendly environment, so the town is equipped with 600 acres of parks and green space, youth athletic leagues, two recreation centers and a 150 acre nature area with walking trails.
Downers Grover was recently awarded a Green Fleet ranking from the Clean Cities Coalition. This award recognizes the city’s initiatives to utilize alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles. The city is continuing to build on their green lifestyle by implementing pedestrian and biker friendly pathways in downtown to encourage alternative forms of transportation.
