On Your Mark … Get Set … SHOP!

Residents — and retailers — all over Illinois are gearing up for the state’s first sales tax holiday.
Designed to help families pay for costly back-to-school items, Illinois shoppers will get a break from paying the 5 percent state sales tax on select items from Friday, August 6 through Sunday, August 15.
The savings breaks down to about 5 cents for every $1 or $5 for every $100 you spend on back-to-school items in Illinois.
Local government taxes still apply, so in the city of Chicago, for example, the 9.75 sales tax will be cut to 4.75 percent during the 10-day tax holiday.
The tax break applies to basic school supplies but not to computers and computer equipment.
Also receiving the discount is any size clothing and footwear priced under $100, which shows that you don’t have to be a student to take advantage of this opportunity.
Winter wear is covered under the tax break, so now would be a good time to stock up for the year.
Many retailers are taking advantage of this holiday with extended or early hours and extra discounts. Keep your ears open for the best places to shop.
