President Barack Obama and his family are planning a trip to Chicago this Memorial Day weekend, and while here, they’ll have some new neighbors to meet.
The Obama’s Chicago home is located at 5046 South Greenwood Avenue in the Kenwood/Hyde Park neighborhood. Last month, the residence right next door was sold for $1.4 million in cash to Lara and Dr. George Moynihan, a plastic surgeon.
That turn-of-the-century, historic home, at 5040 S. Greenwood Ave., has 6,000 square feet of living space plus an adjacent coach house, all on three standard Chicago lots of more than 12,000 square feet.
The main house has 17 rooms on three levels and a huge lower level. There are eight bedrooms, three full and two half baths, a parlor and a beautiful front deck.
The mansion is in need of a lot of renovations, as much of what was put into the house when it was built in 1906 is the same today, including the electrical outlets, woodwork, fixtures and stained glass windows. The Moynihans are reportedly putting in more than $1 million to fix it up and haven’t finished the work yet.
The home was built by A.R. Clark, the original owner of the Obama home, which the Obamas purchased in 2005 for $1.65 million.
This block of South Greenwood is located in the prestigious Kenwood Mansion District and has quite the neighborhood watch: It’s barricaded on both ends and at least two Secret Service agents are always present. You can’t just walk down the street. This weekend, 51st Street will be closed between Woodlawn and Ellis as a result of the President’s visit.
Wonder what the Obamas will do during their stay in Chicago. I know Obama is expected to fly to Louisiana for the day on Friday to view the Gulf oil spill, which has surpassed Exxon Valdez as the worst in U.S. history, and that he will make a speech on Memorial Day at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elmwood, which is about 50 miles southwest of Chicago near Joliet.
His beloved White Sox are on a road trip this weekend, so that’s out. Think we’ll spot the Obamas at the United Center on Saturday cheering on the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup?
Let us know if you spot any of the Obamas around town this Memorial Day weekend. Hope you have a good one!
