A member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Lincoln Park Zoo is a 35-acre zoo that is privately managed and depends primarily on the support of its visitors, members and donors to run. It was founded in 1868 with the gift of a pair of swans. The swans and a silverback gorilla named Bushman were the first animals exhibited. The buildings that have housed the animals for years are historic on their own. Many of them have been named after famous landmarks.
The Lincoln Park Zoo currently has 68 different mammals including a snow leopard, puma, chimpanzee, black bear and Baringo giraffe. It is also home to 27 different reptiles, seven varieties amphibians and 65 birds. In addition, the zoo just recently received a baby Hoffman’s two-toed sloth and two red panda cubs.
Many events are also take place at the Lincoln Park Zoo year round that range from fall festivals and sleepovers to adults-only activities such as Wine & Wildlife: The Masked Bandit.
