How Safe is your Home Office?

Whether you are a telecommuter or a small business owner, you should ensure that your working space is safe, productive and works well for you.

*Make sure the work area you choose is reasonably quiet and free of distractions. Secure the area
*Create the right atmosphere, with clear floors, good ventilation and adequate lighting.
*Install a smoke detector near your work space, devise an escape route in case of an emergency and keep a first-aid kit on hand.
*Secure all phone lines and electrical cords along a wall or under a desk and keep them away from all heat sources and traffic areas. Do not run cords under rugs. Be sure you have no exposed or damaged wiring.
*Turn off your equipment when not in use. Your electronics should be attached to a power surge protector; turn it off when dormant to further save energy.
All set? Now, set up: The ergonomically correct way to work on a computer is by sitting in a sturdy, adjustable chair with a backrest at a desk that is 29 inches high. The computer monitor should be situated 20 to 24 inches from your eyes with the top of the screen slightly below eye level.
