Chicago a Hot Labor Day Spot

Summer is coming to an end and that means it’s time to start making Labor Day plans. Want to get out of your Chicago real estate? Want to stay put? Airfares are down and gas prices are up, but whether you stay or go, you should know that Chicago is one of the most popular Labor Day destinations in the world.
According to Orbitz, Labor Day airfares are lower than they were last year in seven of the top 10 most popular Labor Day destinations.
Las Vegas, New York and Chicago are the top three vacation spots in the U.S. and Europe based on hotel bookings. The average airfare to get to Chicago this Labor Day weekend is $318, a 3 percent decline from last year’s average of $326.
Getting a hotel in the Windy City will cost you, however. Last year’s average Chicago hotel rate was $144; that’s 18 percent lower than this year’s average of $169.
“Labor Day is the unofficial end to summer and for many that means squeezing in one more summer vacation before it is back to the grind of school or a normal work schedule,” said Jeanenne Tornatore, senior travel editor for
“With airfares down to so many locations, there’s now more incentive than ever to fight the urge for a staycation and maybe go a little farther for the long weekend.”
Me, personally? I’ll be sitting in my Chicago home during Labor Day weekend. How about you? Staying or leaving Chicago? Let us know!
