On Thanksgiving Day, residents of McHenry County have the opportunity to give back to their community by participating in the third annual Turkey Trot benefiting JourneyCare Hospice. The story behind the race is a personal one that has touched the lives of many people in the McHenry area, including Gerstad Builders president, Roger Gerstad.
In November 2011, Carlene Siman lost her battle with cancer, a story in which most families can relate. The last weeks of her life were spent being cared for by the amazing team of nurses at JourneyCare Hospice and Palliative Services. Since then, her son Scott Siman and the family have made it an annual mission to raise funding for the special caregivers of JourneyCare, which has facilities in both Woodstock and Barrington, Illinois.
Thanks to an outpouring of support for sponsors, donors, volunteers and 800 runners, $23,000 was raised at the 2013 McHenry Turkey Trot, adding up to a two year total of $40,000. This year’s goal is to have 1,000 runners and to raise $30,000.
The third annual Turkey Trot, presented by Orbis, offers McHenry County families the chance to come together for a fantastic cause in memory of their own loved ones who have fought cancer fearlessly.
Race registration and packet pick-up will begin at 6:30 a.m. on November 27, 2014, followed by the race at 8 a.m. and an awards ceremony at 9:15 a.m. Participants are invited to walk, jog, or run along the course, which begins and ends at McHenry High School’s East Campus. Strollers and leashed animals are allowed at the event for a race the whole family can truly enjoy!
